Potential contamination of SINAQUA™ Dermal Gloves (Distributor Switzerland: gd medical AG, manufacturer: WELCARE INDUSTRIES S.p.A.)

Swissnoso

2 of 2 Lots of SINAQUA™ Dermal Gloves 2% chlorhexidine distributed in Switzerland were tested at the Basel University hospital. 24 samples were analyzed per lot, after vigorous validation experiments to ensure neutralization of Chlorhexidine and recovery of Burkholderia cepacia after artificial contamination.

All samples were negative for growth of gram-negative bacteria, in particular Burkholderia cepacia. Therefore, we did not find evidence of contamination of SINAQUA™ Dermal Gloves 2% chlorhexidine, and they can be used again.

However, some lots of SINAQUA™ Dermal Gloves without chlorhexidine are contaminated, and these products should not be used until further analyses have been completed. These products have been withdrawn from the  market by the distributor (Link).

Burkholderia cepacia complex Outbreak Associated with “SINAQUATM Dermal Glove”
The link between contaminated washing gloves (SINAQUATM Dermal Glove) and clinical cases of Burkholderia contamination/infection in several Swiss hospitals has been confirmed by PFGE-assisted typing. Multiple LOTs of “SINAQUATM Dermal Glove” were tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex. In accordance with the distributor we recommend for the time being to no longer use “SINAQUATM Dermal Gloves” in the clinical setting regardless of the production date. Additionally, several contaminated “SINAQUATM Dermal Gloves” also tested positive for Serratia marcescens. The relevance of this finding is not yet clear. Sporadic sampling of other SINAQUATM products (Shampoo cap, Pediatric glove) have not demonstrated a contamination so far. An independent investigation at the production site in Italy is ongoing. Swiss customers (i.e., hospitals; other healthcare facilities) of SINAQUATM products will be contacted this week with a case reporting form. This investigation was mandated by the FOPH and Swissmedic to the infection control unit of Inselspital Bern. We kindly ask you to support your home institution in helping to report clinical cases.

Swissnoso
