Die Frage, ob Infektionen mit methizillinresistenten Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) gefährlicher sind als Infektionen mit methizillinsensiblen Stämmen (MSSA), beschäftigt schon seit langem die Gemüter von Klinikern und Epidemiologen. Vor kurzem haben zwei grosse Meta-Analysen (Cosgrove et al. Clin Infect Dis 2003;36(1):53 und Whitby et al. Med J Aust 2001;175(5):264) gezeigt, dass MRSA-Infektionen wahrscheinlich mehr Schaden anrichten als vergleichbare MSSA-Infektionen.
